The Artisan Behind the Sewing Machine

Placeholder

Hi - I’m Kelly Axelrod.

I’m an Iowa native who never realized her skills as an XX until I was an adult. In fact, I didn’t start sewing until my mid-twenties after I finished a short career as a flight attendant and started studying to be a teacher. Even when a design professor at UNIVERSITY told me I was a very talented seamstress and should attend the Fabric Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, I didn’t follow their advice. I went on to get my teaching degree in Food, Nutrition, and Sewing to share my skills with the next generation instead. It wasn’t until a few decades later that I began to craft one-of-a-kind pieces for people that I started seeing my craftsmanship as worthy of XX and started Freckles and Fabric. After running my business for XX years in New York, I decided to bring my handmade artisan fabric home decor items and upholstery skills back home to Iowa.

Outside the little formal training I received in college, I’m mostly a self-taught XX. In fact, the challenge of a new design and project is what’s kept fueling my business for all these years. I’m always up for a challenge - that’s why I created a business that finds ways to use remnants to create custom home decor or updated upholstered pieces. I enjoy creating pieces that range from ethnic to sophisticated that leave my customers saying,

“It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for!”

I’m excited to create a custom piece of decor or upholstery for you and hear your ideas!
